Student Development Leaders
The Student Initiative is providing the resource of excellent, trained and vetted students to international development. Results include:
- 2008/2009: Co-creation of currently fully-accredited Social Entrepreneurship (SE) Course "Business Model Innovation at the Base of the Pyramid" with Professor Barkema of LSE Department of Management
- 2009/2010: Co-led integrated pilot SE course at the LSE with Professor Harry Barkema, BOA Member of The Student Initiative
- 2009/2010: Supported creation of businesses founded by pilot course master students: Bloom Microventures is an innovative microfinance tourism business started in Vietnam supported by The Student Initiative Fellow on-the-ground in 2010 - the fantastic success of the pilot course and its students turning professionals attracted attention by the wider social business community.
- 2009: Facilitation of first five vetted interns in work with development organizations around the world, among them the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship at the World Economic Forum in Geneva
- 2009: Co-set-up of highly successful university development societies and organizations including Oxford Microfinance Initiative (OMI) and King's College Social Business Society as well as partnership with/membership by grassroot university partners like UYDO and Global Brigades in Autumn 2009. The Student Initiative starts to work as a representing and guiding umbrella organization to its universities and a leading representative of university students in international development.
- 2010 (January): Completion of research for United Youth Development Organization (UYDO) - a youth-led microfinance support group - regarding the question whether MFIs in Sub-Saharan Africa do not sufficiently provide services to the youth. The findings of the study acknowledge the need for a bigger support for this group.
- 2010 (March): Two The Student Initiative Fellows worked on and completed assignments and research for BRAC in Bangladesh and Shivia in India.
- 2010 (April): Completion of research work for UNITUS Capital - an investment firm - titled "Unitus Capital Research Project - A Small-Scale Clean Energy Indian Market Analysis". The study uses various sources to establish a comprehensive map of the market.
- 2010 (May): Assessment of the current social investment market - which is being used for developing social investment strategies for partners and The Student Initiative.
- 2010 (July): The Student Initiative was appointed by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship to identify around 15 excellent students to work with their leading social entrepreneurs around the world and at the Foundation directly. After successful deployment of The Student Initiative Fellows, they reported about their experiences worldwide.
- 2010 (October): Research for the MicroLoan Foundation - a UK-based microfinance institution - on microfinance operations in Zimbabwe has been completed.
- 2010 (October): Completion of Research for Prosperitas - a Columbian microfinance organization - on outreach of the organization.
- 2010/2011: Creation of educational courses and lecture series adding to the finalized SE course: The Student Initiative Microfinance Course (running two sessions in 2010/2011 at the London School of Economics), The Student Initiative Venture Capitalism in Development Course (running first session 2011 at the University College London) and The Student Initiative Information Technology for Development (ICT4D) Course (running first session 2011 at London School of Economics)
- 2011 (January): London Development Forum (LDF) 2011 at the London School of Economics, first ever professional development conference including students and professionals in London
In 2010 and 2011 The Student Initiative has been expanding its Fellows network and continues to do so - our work diversifies and becomes more professional. A lot of services for 2011/2012 are already being provided and have been completed.
In 2012 The Student Initiative plans to be truly set up as a recognized player in the industry.
